Originally marketed as “Lyrica”, Pregabalin is a long-lasting pain relief for those suffering from varying degrees of nerve pain. Nerve pain occurs when damage or changes to your nerves have occurred by injury or disease (such as shingles or diabetes). This damage causes the nerves to misfire and send pain signals to the brain when no damage is present.

Description

Medical Uses of Pregabalin

Pregabalin has been shown to be very effective in the treatment of other types of chronic pain or disease, such as: fibromyalgia, epilepsy seizures, restless leg syndrome, spinal cord damage, generalised anxiety and other disorders that may have affected the nervous system.Pregabalin was created as the successor to gabapentin, both part of the gabapentinoid family.

How It Works

Pregabalin is part of an anticonvulsant class of medications. It works by reducing the amount of pain signals sent directly from the nerves themselves, resulting in less pain received by the brain.Pregabalin works by inhibiting particular calcium channels in the brain and along the spinal cord.  In turn, these lower the strength with which the neurotransmitters can emit their pain signals, leading to a lessened pain-sensation. For optimum results, the medication needs to be taken over an extended period of time.

Precautions and Contraindications with Pregabalin

While available without a prescription, prior discussion with your doctor is always recommended. Pregabalin is not for use by those under the age of 18. Those planning on pregnancy, who are pregnant or who are lactating are highly recommended to speak to their healthcare professional before proceeding with a course of Pregabalin, as are those who have any kidney problems or known allergies to other medications. Extreme allergies can prove to be fatal in the worst scenarios.
